Claude Code does not require you to be a developer. It requires you to describe what you want in plain language, and to read what it proposes before you say yes. Everything below is the part nobody explains: the setup that makes it usable if you are a founder, a PM, a designer, an ops coordinator, or a VA.

Yes. The barrier is not the typing, it is the setup. Out of the box, Claude Code asks permission before nearly every command and starts each session knowing nothing about your project. Both of those are configuration problems, not skill problems, and both are fixed once rather than daily.
A CLAUDE.md is a plain-text briefing note that Claude Code reads automatically at the start of every session. It says what the project is, how work should be done, and what to never touch.
The useful mental model: you are onboarding a contractor who is excellent, fast, and has never seen your project before — every single morning. The briefing note is how they arrive already knowing.
A real example, public and free to read: kit-claude-code-starter.
Because nothing has been added to its allowlist yet. The permission prompt is not a bug, it is an unconfigured allowlist.
You decide once which commands are routine for your project, and it stops interrupting for those. Anything that deletes, publishes, or spends money stays off the list deliberately, so the interruptions you keep are the ones actually worth reading.
| Piece | What it does | Who writes it |
|---|---|---|
| CLAUDE.md | Briefs every session on the project automatically | You, or Setup Lite |
| Permission allowlist | Stops the constant approve-this prompts | You, or Setup Lite |
| One skill | Your most repeated request, written down once | You, or Setup Lite |
| Hooks | Runs a check automatically after a change | Setup Sprint |
| MCP servers | Connects it to other tools you already use | Setup Sprint |
Not on this list on purpose: anything that requires you to already be an engineer. If a setup guide opens by assuming you know what a package manager is, it was not written for this audience.
The job Claude Code does well here is the repeated one: the weekly report that always gets assembled the same way, the inbox triage rules, the document that gets reformatted for the same client every time.
Write the repeated task down once as a skill, and the second week costs a fraction of the first. The common first-week mistake is treating it as a chat window and re-explaining the same task from scratch every session.
The wedge is paperwork that has a fixed shape: quotes, invoices, job sheets, scheduling notes, the same customer email written four hundred times.
Start with one of those, not with your whole business. A single narrow project with a good briefing note beats a broad setup that nobody configured, and it is finishable in an evening rather than a quarter.
These are published and free to inspect. None require an account, and none are gated behind an email address.
Flat prices, written scope, and you can stop at any rung. There is no call to book and no retainer.
| Rung | What you get | Clock |
|---|---|---|
| Free — starter repo | Read a real setup and copy it yourself | now |
| $29 — Setup Lite | One project: CLAUDE.md, allowlist, one skill, as a pull request | 24 hours |
| $99 — Setup Sprint | 3–5 skills, hooks, up to 3 MCP servers, plus a runbook | 48 hours |
| $79 — Surface Audit | Already set up and fighting it: contradictions and an exact fix list | 48 hours |
The intake form asks in plain language. You do not need to know what any of these words mean before you buy.
Setup Lite $29 Setup Sprint $99 Or start freeClocks run from a complete intake, not from the Stripe receipt. One project at a time, so start dates are first come, first served. Weighing this against paying a person hourly instead: Kit vs hiring a freelancer.
Claude Projects is a chat workspace with files attached to it. Claude Code runs against a real folder on your machine and changes the files in it. Projects is better for thinking and drafting; Claude Code is better when the output is the files themselves.
